Hawaii is now slated to export its trash far to the East of West………Washington State. Honolulu has increased its waste by 26% in the last seven years. Yet, the city has been unable to get a recycling program off the ground that would help diminish this accumulation in the landfills. Residents should be aware of their contributions to the situation.

The “Opala Kai” (opala - Hawaiian for trash) is made from recyclables, litter, and rubbish - rescued from the 2,500 mile journey via boat to the Washington landfills. The “Opala Kai” carries the recycle in the bow, trash in the main cargo, and litter off the stern. A tank full of gas and a pile of denial will not shrink our wake of consumption.
